Last nights episode of Jane The Virgin taught us that sometimes you really do need your mother and that no matter what you guys may be going through your mother always has your best interest at heart. As you read that last sentence keep in mind that it only applies to Jane and not so much Petra. I do believe that Petra mother is interested in her but it’s for all the wrong reasons.
Last week Jane found out that Rogelio De La Vega was her father and throughout Chapter 5 we witness the aftermath of this revelation. Jane is so furious with her mother for keeping her father away from her all these years. I don’t see Jane letting this go. She might get over it but I don’t think she will fully forgive her mother for keeping someone so important away from her. Xiomara knew how much Jane yearned for a father but yet she still kept such a big secret away from her. I can understand where she’s coming from. I could understand her anger, I can understand her needing space and I can understand her not being able to forgive her mother just yet. It’s a lot to process and in a sense Xiomara did take away a part of Jane’s life and now she’s 23 yrs. old and doesn’t have a relationship with her father Rogelio. However, we can’t only put the blame on Xiomara, Rogelio needs to share the blame also because as he explained to Jane “he was 17 and he wasn’t ready.”
Meanwhile back on the set of Rogelio’s telenovela he’s preparing for the arrival of Jane. Rogelio is so dramatic. He wants to make this grand entrance to impress Jane but what he doesn’t know is that all this fame and fortune isn’t Jane’s thing and that’s not what she wants. Rogelio had his entire crew recreate the Mayan Ruins Chichen Itza. To him this was a place of significance and I was like aww this is so fatherly of him. He’s trying to show Jane something from his childhood. Guess what I was wrong because this place was only of significance to Rogelio because this is where he prayed to the Gods for great fame and fortune. Oh Rogelio had me fooled. He really sucked at this first impression and what made it so much worse was when he handed Jane his autobiography to read if she wanted to know more about him. OMG this made me so mad and I so agree with Jane when she said he was shallow and vain because it’s so true. Jane just wanted to show him baby pictures and he messed the entire thing up. He knew nothing about being a father and trying to make that connection and at first he really thought he could treat Jane as one of his fans or a character in one of his roles but he was wrong. Even though he knew this was the real deal he exaggerated the situation a bit too much. After their first meeting Jane was so frustrated because it was such a failure and all she wanted to do was talk to her mother but Jane wasn’t talking to her mother. Thankfully Michael talked to her and calmed her down, which he has been a lot recently and persuaded her to invite Rogelio over for dinner at their place. However, this was another failure because earlier Rogelio went to see Xiomara for advice and she crying and being the type of man Rogelio is, he felt sorry for Xiomara and tried to get Jane to forgive her mother and understand where she was coming. It did not go over so well and I think this was just too soon. He meant well but it wasn’t his place to tell Jane what to do about her relationship with her mother. I think that’s a problem with Rogelio, he just wants to step into the role of father right away without getting to know Jane first. He’s means well but he also needs to step back a bit. I’m very eager to see what turn his relationship with Jane will take and as he said to her during their third meeting “He’s not walking away from her even if it’s not perfect.” I loved what he said and that was very genuine. Rogelio is one of my favorites in the show and his storyline with Jane is really beautiful. I can’t wait to see how this blossoms.
I honestly can’t stand Michael’s brother Billy. Billy shows up again in Chapter 5 and demands that Michael gives him $2000 or else he’s not going to stay away from Jane. Later on when Jane tells Michael that Billy is dating her best friend at work he finally confesses about his dark past. I knew Michael had a secret but OMG stealing cars and selling them for parts and then having his brother take the fall for him, well if I was Billy I would feel like my brother owes me something but he needs to chill. He’s dating Jane’s best friend and I feel the only reason he’s doing it is to taunt Michael. I also feel like him showing up in this episode has deeper meaning and significance. I also feel like he’s somehow connected to Michael’s investigation. I don’t trust him at all.
It’s official Rafael and Petra is getting a divorce. He served her divorce papers, told her he doesn’t love her anymore and offered her $250,000, which was the agreed amount in their prenup. If you’ve been watching the show from Chapter One you would know that this is not the amount of money Petra wants. The $250,000 is chump change to the millions she wants so we all know Petra isn’t going down without a fight. Petra’s mother Magda is pure evil. This woman is up to no good. When Petra came back with the divorce papers and showed her mother Magda, she was upset but not defeated. Magda might be old and in a wheelchair but she’s no fool and she’s not weak. She has Petra’s interests in heart as long as she benefits and with this $250,000 Rafael was giving Petra she wasn’t benefiting at all. The next thing I saw was Magda moisturizing her hands and then POW she punched Petra in the eye. At first, I really thought she was punching Petra for being stupid and getting caught cheating but then the police arrived. Magda is very sly. I would have never suspected her to pull a move like that. I guess the saying is true the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. This woman made Petra blame Rafael for her black eye and then file a police report and they did all of this to nullify the prenup so they’ll probably get half or maybe all of Rafael’s money. Magda and Petra working together is going destructive. I often wonder if Magda even needs that wheelchair she’s in. She just doesn’t let that chair hold her back. I swear greed and the lust for money really makes a person act irrational.
Now that Jane knows that Rafael and Petra’s marriage is over she’s thinking of keeping the baby. She has always imagined the baby growing up and living with two loving parents and now that this is not going to happen she’s changing her tune and Rafael doesn’t want to share custody of the baby especially if Michael is in the picture. He’s even voiced his opinions to Rosa who is going to help find custody lawyers and then he let it slip that he doesn’t even know why Jane’s with Michael and Rosa picked up on it and asked him if he had feeling for Jane and replied “its complicated.” Everyone knows the “its complicated” actually means yes I have feelings but I don’t know what to do, how to feel or even trust these feelings. I’m guessing Rafael is still having sexy dreams about Jane and it’s making him feel things for Jane.
The silent feud that Michael and Rafael are having is just priceless. Every time they saw each other in this episode their actions towards each spoke volumes. There is a genuine hate between these two men. I can so foresee a fistfight coming pretty soon and now that Michael is willing to raise his baby Rafael is fuming. Rafael doesn’t want that at all.
In this episode we were also introduced to a new and very important character “Disgusting Tom.” Tom is a bellboy and apparently when Rafael gave Michael and his partner the list of employees who was working the night of Roman’s murder his name failed to make the list. In my opinion, the little details in this show you really have to pay attention to and I think Rafael not putting his name on the list for the police is very suspicious. I’m not saying Rafael is guilty; it’s just very suspicious that his name didn’t end up on the list of people to be interviewed by the police. Unfortunately, the police never got to interview “Disgusting Tom” because Rosa and Rafael found him almost dead in the hallway and before he died he mentioned a very important name “Sin Rostro.” Apparently, whoever murdered Tom was known as Sin Rostro or the man without a face and it so happens that this person is a person of interest in Michael’s investigation. So now Rosa and Rafael know that Sin Rostro is a drug king pin and also the person who Roman was supposed to be meeting the night he was murdered. It’s so crazy that all this is just coming to light. I just love the element of mystery Jane The Virgin has going on right now. Right now I’m curious to know whom this Sin Rostro is; it can literally be anybody. It can be a character we love so much or it can be someone who they haven’t even introduced yet or someone we would never suspect. I just love the mystery. R.I.P Disgusting Tom sucks we didn’t get to know more about you.
Lastly, one of the things I admire about Jane is that she’s honest and she expects the people around her to show her that same respect and be honest also. She can be a bit naïve but it’s one of the qualities I love so much about her. Throughout the episode as Jane and Michael are discussing their lives one of the things she demands from Michael is that he must always be honest with her especially during this time in her life, when there are so many obstacles she’s facing at the moment. I think this would have been the perfect moment for him to come clean about his prior knowledge about Petra’s affair but instead he kept quiet and said nothing. He’s doing everything out of love but when you love someone you owe them the truth at all times no matter how difficult it can be. When she found out he knew about the affair and that he pretended he didn’t know when she told him, this broke her. Jane felt betrayed, she thought that she knew Michael and she never expected him to keep something like this from her especially since she made it clear to him that she needed and wanted honesty at all time. I don’t think she’s going to forgive him and I don’t know if their relationship can survive this betrayal. He really messed up this time around and as I always say what happens in the dark always comes to light sooner than later.
So there you have it guys that’s my Chapter Five TV Talk. What did you guys think of the episode? I thought it was very thought provoking and I had to watch it twice just to get all the little hints and clues they dropped. Who knew Petra was pregnant at one point and they were actually in love. I was surprised that Petra was the one who gave Rafael the push to develop the location where the hotel is now located. I wish they had dived more into the Petra’s past instead of leaving us hanging from Chapter Four. I would love to know why Billy is dating Lina and why he needs $2000 from Michael. Overall the moral and theme of this entire episode was you really do need your mother and a perfect example of this was when Jane found out that Michael lied to her the first person she ran to without hesitation was her mother regardless of everything they were going through at the moment. The episode also revealed that nothing is perfect and that perfection is just a fantasy. In life things, people and relationships can just change without any warning and sometimes it can’t be prevented. This episode was really emotional and emotionally it wrecked my heart to see Jane so sad and in so much pain. I really hope she recovers from all this pain and betrayal. I want back the fun, happy and optimistic Jane.
